Why choose a childminder? What is a
Childminder?
A childminder looks after one
or more children under the age of 8. For at least 2 hours a day in
the childminders home, for reward. All childminders must be
registered by Ofsted. Childminders are self employed, so therefore
make their own working conditions. Ofsted set standards in which
childminders must abide by. In addition childminders should have
their own policies and procedures in place. Opportunities for
children in a childminders care.
Childminders are allowed to
look after a maximum of 6 children with no more than 3 preschoolers
at any one time. However childminders who work with an assistant
(such as I do) can be registered to care for more. When working with
an assistant I can care for up to 6 preschoolers, with no more than
2 being under 12 months. Registered childminders are committed to
offering a high standard of service and a high quality of play and
learning opportunities for your children. As a registered
childminder we will have undertaken training and may take on further
training to help us learn how to develop and understand children’s
physical, intellectual, emotional and educational needs.
Childminders are able to offer a more varied setting than any other
kind of childcare environment. We can offer continuity of care, a
home based environment, daily outings, and a more personal
relationship with the children and their families. Flexibility.
Most childminders can be
extremely flexible and many can offer full/part-time care, weekend
cover, early mornings and late evenings. If stated in their
registration overnight care may also be available. We are able to
offer school/nursery runs and can offer care for older siblings
also. Safety Regulations.
All registered childminders
are inspected by Ofsted. The Ofsted inspector will ensure that the
childminder is a suitable person and that their home is safe and
child friendly. Policies will need to be in place including a
medication policy, health and safety etc. etc. Ofsted will ensure
that children are given the opportunities to develop and thrive in a
child based environment. Registered childminders, assistants and
anyone over the age of 16 in the childminders home will have had a
full CRB check carried out. Childminders must have public liability
insurance and if drivers business cover on their car insurance
policies. Always obtain references and follow them up.
